READING

Close Up of Pink Roses

The skill of reading is a place where you learn to adjust your approach to reading depending on what kind of book it is, and you learn to make comprehensive  summaries of thing you have read.

Orwell and Huxley: the Creators of the Dystopian World

In English of 9th grade we had a block on dystopia where we read The One Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, in addition to 1984 by Orwell and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. In this paper I compare and contrast the first 20 pages of Orwell and Huxley's masterpieces and their use of inference.

Into the Wild Relfection

In English during my 10th grade year we read Into the Wild by Krakauer. In class we had a series of questions to answer about the book to show our understanding of the book and events in Chris McCandless's life.

The Hummingbird's Daughter: Characterization and Development

During 9th grade English we had a Latin American literature block where we read Luis Alberto Urrea's spirited book depicting a young girl known to many as Santa Teresa, who was one of the primary leaders of Mexican Revolution in the turn of the 20th century. In "the Hummingbirds Daughter" we watch Teresa go from childhood through adolescence and from just another indigenous orphan on a big plantation to a renowned saint and revolutionary. In Hummingbird's Daughter Urrea develops a variety in depth characters and in this essay I explore how he brings them to life.
